Three km from Moulay Idriss, 30 km north of Meknes, 70 km northwest of Fez, in the verdant hills overlooking the ancient ruins of Volubilis, this is a wonderful antidote to the generally drab accommodations in Meknes and Fez. Though stellar facilities are not the main draw, a calm location attracts European package tours with vigor.
The bright yellow entrance to this three-building complex is graced with thick pillars and decorated with vibrant mosaic tile signs, marble floors, heavy brass oil lamps, Roman statuary (including a bust of Volubilis's ancient ruler), and rugs designed to look like stylized mosaics. The decor is complemented by piped-in classical
or Berber music.
Lounges—one in a golden yellow, the other in a deep reddish ocher—flank both sides of the lobby and feature fireplaces, French chairs and bars. The lounges open onto a terrace, which affords dramatic vistas of the ancient city in the distance.
From the lobby, stairs lead down to a pool and a bridge that crosses over a thick garden of vines and bamboo to two rooftop snack bars. Other dining options include an international buffet and a tented Moroccan restaurant. The outdoor grill is lit during the high season and overlooks
the manicured gardens and pool, but live music is a constant disturbance to guests who do not need staff-induced excitement. Unfortunately, cheap plastic furniture and limited seating do little to improve the setting. Spa and recreational facilities are available nearby.
The air-conditioned accommodations offer simple white and peach decor, sparse furnishings, tile floors, TVs, minibars, brass Moroccan lamps, comfortable beds and sunny balconies. Heating is on hand for the winter. Baths have modern fixtures and WCs with bidets. Four suites provide extras such as a welcome basket of fruit and fresh flowers, in addition to expanded living space, although the digs are equally devoid of charm.
Its principal location in the city makes convenient shopping jaunts a pleasure rather than a hassle. Pets are permitted. Most stays here are package rates of either two or seven nights. The staff speaks fair English and excellent French and is eager to lend a hand, making this a great place to rejuvenate when on a tour of Morocco. However, if one-on-one attention and thoughtful management are prerequisites, then head into town to find a more service-oriented property such as the superior Jnan Palace.
