Located in the Saleska valley, Velenje is the economic and administrative hub of the region. It's worth visiting to see the unique Slovenian Coal Mining Museum, which received an award from the European Museum Forum. There you take an almost two-hour trip down into a former Slovene coal mine to experience a miner's life. Also included in the journey is a miner's lunch. Velenje is also home to the 13th-century Velenje Castle, which is now a museum. 52 mi/84 km northeast of Ljubljana.
