Three km from Scarborough, eight km from Crown Point and the airport, this 1997 began operations in 1997 as a Hilton. Set on eight palm-studded hectares, the upbeat contemporary resort affords breathtaking sea views at every turn, and golfers will drool over the adjacent PGA links.
This is not a high-rise complex, and the building spreads out in two wings, keeping a lower profile with the lay of the grounds. The entrance driveway ends with a grand view of the plantation lobby building and a cascading waterfall. A refined plantation aura in the public areas elevates the decor above the island norm. Custom rattan furniture spiffs up the lobby, and stately columns divide the room into cozy quadrants. The huge glass windows in the lobby allow guests to see the water the moment they arrive. Jalousies mark the adjoining bar, which overlooks one of three pools and the beach beyond.
Dining is in one of three restaurants or two pubs. Service is average, and prices are high. A casual-elegant dress code is enforced for the evening meals. Evening entertainment on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday enlivens the stylish British-inspired pub, and a swim-up bar gives good reason to finish one's laps. Sunday jazz and afternoon tea round out the
social events.
The recreational options here are what draw most guests, with golfing and diving topping the list. The dive shop is one of the best-equipped on the island, and instructors are PADI-certified. Other facilities include a gym, sauna, two lighted tennis courts and massage services. A children's center provides counselors and activities to keep kids busy while their parents relax. A complimentary shuttle takes guests to the beach on the opposite side of the island when weather changes bring rough water or seasonal jellyfish.
Meeting capacity is 500 people, and the business center is open every day except Sunday. High-speed Internet access is available in the rooms and business center at an extra charge, as is wireless connection. A gift shop and beauty salon are also on the premises, and parking is free.
The spacious accommodations show bright contemporary fabrics dressing up windows, chairs and beds. Old-fashioned paddle fans whirling overhead ensure fresh air, and potted plants contribute to the resort look. Deep carved armoires hide TVs, and desks hold phones with voice mail and data ports. Air-conditioning, safes, minibars, electric kettles, digital alarm clocks, sea-view balconies or terraces, and big marble baths with shower/tub combinations and magnifying mirrors are standard. Standard rooms and superiors differ only in that the former are on the ground floor.
Housekeeping and maintenance issues have been known to arise, and the hotel does not always respond quickly.
Room service never stops, although it can be slow. This resort is often chosen by vacationers and incentive groups.
