This mountainous Cycladic island is called the "Lourdes of Greece" because the icon in its Cathedral of the Holy Virgin is reputed to have miraculous curing powers.
It draws pilgrims from afar, especially on 25 March (Greek Independence Day) and 15 August (the Assumption). Tinos has sandy beaches for swimming and sailing facilities. The town of
Pyrgos is quaint and interesting. To get there, take one of the daily boats from Piraeus.
Tinos is 80 mi/130 km southeast of Athens.
