Located in the center of the village 19 miles northeast of Taos (a 25-minute drive), this place was built in 1946 and then rebuilt in 1993 as a ski lodge. Since the last inspection, this operation has been converted into privately owned and decorated condominiums, with very limited facilities.
This is a place for self-sufficient skiers and outdoor enthusiasts, and the off-season rates are an excellent bargain. Located at the base of the slopes just a few yards from the No. 1 chair lift, this four-story hotel looks like a postmodern Tudor, its double-peaked roofline the largest presence in the village.
The modest lobby provides one-quarter of the public areas. The breakfast room has closed, and narry a stale bagel can be found in the morning. That said the on-site convenience store provides staples like coffee and doughnuts. The hotel's only other facilities are a recreational triumvirate: whirlpool, gym and sauna. More active guests enjoy horseback riding, and miles of hiking trails are just out the back door. Parking is free.
The accommodations are comprised of studios and one-and two-bedroom apartments,
with a few of the larger units appending loft rooms. Each of the individually decorated condominiums supply king or twin-bedded sleeping areas with separate TVs, quality carpeting and drapes throughout, and with the exception of the studios, fully equipped kitchens and large living areas. The kitchens come with all the pots, pans and cutlery needed to cook a meal for six hungry mouths.
Like the Fechin Inn, rooms here have phones, TVs and such comforts as coffeemakers, heated floors, robes, hair dryers and humidifiers. Baths are ordinary combination models with adjoining vanities.
Room service is not offered, smoking is not permitted and pets are no longer allowed.
Skiers should look into packages that include lift tickets. This refuge for self-sufficient condominium complex is usually closed mid April-May and mid October-Thanksgiving.
