This hotel is located in the heart of downtown Ketchikan, across from the busiest waterfront in Alaska. This National Register Historic Landmark opened in 1927, advertising itself as one of the city's first fireproof hotels. Its concrete construction was a novelty at the time. The property underwent a multimillion-dollar refurbishment in the mid-1990s but still retains the simple charm of 1920s frontier Ketchikan. Named after a pioneer family, the hotel showcases local art and simplistic accessories.
Annabelle's Restaurant, downstairs, serves all meals and features Continental and seafood dishes; it is a downtown gathering spot where the local power elite chow down on Ketchikan's best seafood chowder while they chew on the issues of the day. Continental breakfast is included in the room tariff. Leather banquette booths and burgundy upholstery lend an air of historic sophistication. Though
the dining room and lounge are spacious, other public areas are tight, and getting around can be a challenge. Hungry guests can partake of cookies and coffee in the lobby.
A business center proffers a computer with free Internet access. Fisherfolk have the unique amenity of storing their catches of the day in a dedicated refrigerator. Parking is available at no charge.
Guest rooms are generally smaller than those at the Cape Fox or Landing, in keeping with the compact layout of downtown buildings. Most rooms have spectacular views of the water and overstuffed chairs for comfort. All are tasteful but understated, and they feature combination baths with hair dryers, coffeemakers, TVs and phones with data ports. Some rooms have cramped vanities oddly situated by the beds. Complimentary
wireless Internet allows guests to write home and describe the wild, wild western spirit at this lovely hotel. A dozen of the units feature upgrades, including flat-screen TVs, satin comforters, luxurious Egyptian cotton sheets and feather beds. One suite provides more space for those who may need stretching room.
A complimentary van shuttles guests around the area. Room service operates during restaurant hours. Pets are not permitted here, and guests with limited mobility should be aware that there is no elevator here. Several rooms are designated as smoke-free. Thin walls allow outside noise to permeate the guest rooms with ease. Still, this charming waterfront option is an excellent choice for soaking in the local energy of this popular and active city.
