This seven-story hotel, which sprawls across a rolling green hill overlooking the golf course and the ocean, is the largest and, arguably, most luxurious full-service resort on the island. This hotel and its regal sibling, the Fairmont Hamilton Princess, have made major changes. Both added a premium level. Upgraded Fairmont Gold rooms offer special amenities, personalized concierge services, and access to an elegant lounge serving breakfast, afternoon tea and evening appetizers. It is, in effect, a hotel within a hotel, but during the off season it is frequently closed.
The redesigned lobby gives way to a lounge offering ocean vistas and Bermudian style. In the main dining room, Windows on the Sound, the soft decor is enhanced by live music, and a mural graces one wall. The restaurant's expansive windows serve up extraordinary views, and the chef serves up delicious meals all day long. Other dining options include Wickets,
a casual family restaurant, and Newport Room, an elegant dining room with a nautical setting. The outstanding 400-year-old Waterlot Inn across the street offers up savory entrees in a quiet atmosphere that evokes the historic island atmosphere lacking from most visitor perspectives. The hotel has two bars, and a DJ or live music keeps nights lively.
Indoor and outdoor pools, a beach club, an 18-hole par-three golf course, croquet lawn and five tennis courts (two lighted) keep guests busy. Children have access to a game room and a fully supervised activities program. The new Willow Stream Spa offers services unmatched by any hotel on the island. Its facilities include a large workout room, several treatment rooms, saunas, steam rooms, relaxation areas and locker rooms. Its elegance is matched by the daily charge applied for use, unless one of the many exotic spa treatments are reserved (access to the facilities is
free). Plenty of lounge chairs and terrace seating are available.
An extensive shopping arcade, tour desk and beauty salon are also on hand. Fully equipped conference space, including large ballrooms and an amphitheater, can host groups as large as 1,500. Trolleys and golf carts shuttle guests about the premises. Those wishing to head to the beach, participate in watersports, or do some shopping can hop on the bus that stops at the bottom of the hill or take the complimentary ferry to its sister hotel.
Guest rooms display high-quality appointments, pastel colors, tiling and furnished balconies with fine island or ocean views. All have one king or two double beds. Smoke-free floors and rooms for guests in wheelchairs are available. High-speed Internet access is provided in all guest rooms at no charge to
members of its equally complimentary President’s Club program, and wireless beams through the public areas. Additional amenities include cable TVs, CD players, minibars, safes, umbrellas and complimentary shoeshines. Marble baths gleam in their new appointments and offer the finest toiletries, robes and heated mirrors. Room service runs from 7 am to midnight.
This hotel's gloss, location and facilities attract conventions, groups, golfers and tennis buffs, but all guests enjoy a good return on their considerable investment in this self-contained establishment. Various meal plans are available, and repeat visitors are the norm. Business travelers tend to bunk at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess in the downtown area, but those looking for resort style, this is the best choice on the island.
