Sydney Travel Guide

Sydney Guide Overview

As alluring as the scenic routes are, you might also consider a visit to Sydney. It's the largest city on Cape Breton and is the island's industrial center. A number of historic buildings are worth visiting. St. Patrick's Church, on the Esplanade, displays artifacts from the town's early history. The building was constructed in 1828 and is the oldest Roman Catholic church on Cape Breton Island. The Jost House, a block away on the corner of Amelia and Charlotte streets, was the home of a prominent Sydney merchant in the 1700s. It now contains maritime exhibits and special collections. The Cossit House Museum, on the east side of Charlotte Street, is believed to be the oldest residence in Sydney. The town's first Anglican minister, Ranna Cossit, built it around 1787. It is located halfway between the site of the former governor's mansion and his church. If you walk two blocks south on Charlotte, you'll reach St. George's Church, where Cossit once preached.

The Cape Breton Center of Heritage and Science, housed in a former opera house, offers changing local and visiting exhibits. The museum gift shop stays open year-round, Tuesday-Saturday in winter, and Monday-Saturday in summer. The center also offers guided walking tours of downtown Sydney. Phone 902-539-1572.

One of the most ethnically diverse areas is the neighborhood of Whitney Pier, north of downtown. It is named after the first president of the steel mill. The steel mill that supported much of Sydney's population until the 1940s is being dismantled, but the rest of the mill town remains. Whitney Pier is said to be home to at least 50 ethnic groups. The old community synagogue is the area's museum.
