Destination Guidebook for Sumbu National Park, Zambia

On the shores of Lake Tanganyika, this park will appeal to adventurous anglers who can view hippos, buffalo, pukus and elephants before casting their lines for Nile perch, lake salmon and dozens of other sport fish. Accommodations are at Kasaba, Ndole Bay and Nkamba lodges. All include lakeside chalets, each with a private veranda and view of the water; Nkamba is the only one that offers game drives in the park. One unusual feature of the park is night boat rides to see crocodiles hovering on the surface of the lake. A side trip can be made to Kalambo Falls: These magnificent waterfalls are 715 ft/218 m tall, more than twice as high as Victoria Falls (though not nearly as wide). Be aware before you go that it's a three-day hike to the falls. And just 45 mi/70 km west of Sumbu is yet another national park—Mweru Wantipa—found along the banks of a lake of the same name. 500 mi/805 km northeast of Lusaka.
