Commanding 10 acres 2 miles west of Franconia, this charming converted farmhouse is known for its warm hospitality and reasonable rates. Thanks to the hard work and imagination of the hands-on owners, this hostelry is in great shape. Though modest by most standards, this cozy, inviting inn appeals to traditionalists. Lovett's Inn, however, has more sparkle.
Flagstone and fieldstone mark the entrance, and rockers dot the front porch. The cozy parlor has a whimsical antique sled table, and a guitar hangs on the wall. The beautiful fireplace dates from 1789. Afternoon tea with scones and sweets makes this a pleasant
stop at check-in. Few will notice the wooden peg nails in the reception desk, but savvy guests delight in the meticulous detailing, well preserved throughout.
The bright old-fashioned dining room serves elaborate country breakfasts and excellent dinners at two sittings (included in the rates during foliage season), and the pub provides roadside views, potent elixirs and an opportunity for conversation.
The inn lacks a pool or whirlpool, but the innkeepers offer massage and facial treatments.
Weddings are popular in the garden. Parking is free.
Compact but cozy guest rooms are individually decorated with fancy wall treatments and fabrics replaced as needed. The owners have updated most guest rooms since taking over two years ago, but left in place the stenciled walls, Oriental rugs over maple floors, antique furniture, handmade quilts and traditional spreads. All rooms contain digital clocks and private baths. Views are limited. Pitched-roof cottages with porches house additional guest rooms with sofas and TVs. Unit 17 is a particularly good choice. Cinema fans will want to book the Bette Davis Suite. The sad-eyed actress used to bed down in this cozy, unassuming room when she visited the area. Two newer units have whirlpool tubs, and four very spacious units have wood-stove-style fireplaces. The two luxury suites, with whirlpools for two, fireplaces and private decks, are already the most popular, requiring early booking.
Smoking is not allowed on the premises. Pets are not permitted. Casual and friendly, this is a pleasant base to see what remains of the Man of the Mountain.
