Located 15 miles from the airport, this hotel is situated on a beach in a city built for tourists. It is minutes away from the city center, the Medina d'Agadir, a recreation of an ancient kasbah built by Italian architect Coco Polizzi.
Rising from the sandy ocean shore like a great white mirage, the imposing entrance to the resort looms over a tile-covered circular driveway, which twists around a grand circular sitting area with cushions and pillows. As it's a traditional outdoor living room, many guests choose to linger here with a glass of steaming mint tea while fez-topped bellhops assist with heavy luggage. This is only a pleasant hint of what lies inside this extraordinary complex.
Lunch and dinner are served at the pool area in the Grill des Dunes terrace restaurant. The fresh fare prepared in outdoor kitchens is casual and includes a good selection of salads, pizza, sandwiches, and such grilled dishes as lamb, fish and chicken. More formal dining is offered in La Caravane and La Nasse restaurants. La Caravane has a variety of international dishes on the menu, along with selected local specialties topping off
the mouthwatering list. Guests can choose from the daily buffet or opt for a la carte dishes served in intimate outdoor areas under the shade of a palm tree. Open for lunch and dinner, La Nasse specializes in fresh seafood and a variety of unusual Asian-Moroccan fusion culinary dishes. Especially intriguing are the spices and tangy sauces that are served with all of the meals. Numerous watering holes provide an unlimited list of drinks and perches from which to enjoy them.
The enormous pool, a few hundred yards from the private beach, undulates like a river under arched bridges, and around palm trees and domed buildings. Musicians play traditional Moroccan tunes, and entertainers, including dancers, acrobats, jugglers and fire-eaters, wander the grounds. Traditional craftsmen proffer hand-carved wooden boxes and sculptures, handmade shoes, brass works, and hand-loomed scarves and cloths. Vendors sell everything from exotic spices to mosaic-inlaid doors. Along the beach, an elaborate equestrian show with horses and turban-wrapped riders is played out several times a day. Guests who are game can ride a camel along the beach.
A full fitness center
is open to guests, along with a traditional hammam, heated pools, sauna, solarium, and massage and spa treatments (some available poolside). Tennis courts and pools are on-site, and guests can enjoy such watersports as surfing, diving and Jet Ski riding. The impressive pool is ringed with lounge chairs, snow-white fabric umbrellas and plush four-poster day beds, shady palm trees, and a bridge that connects to a small central island in the pool. Lavish sun beds dot the clean beach.
Almost a dozen rooms cater to social and business functions for up to 500 people. These rooms can be configured in a variety of ways. Multimedia equipment includes DVDs, large-screen TVs and overhead projectors.
All of the guest rooms are spacious, light and inviting. Most rooms have king or double beds padded in crisp linens and thick duvets and separate sitting areas. The desk area provides plenty of workspace, good lighting, convenient electrical outlets (220 volts only) and Internet access. Many rooms offer high-speed Internet access or Wi-Fi. Other amenities include safes, minibars, 19-inch satellite TVs, air-conditioning and a small balcony. The large baths are fitted
with a tub and double sinks and provide a magnifying mirror and hair dryer. Sleek marble surfaces, enormous mirrors, slippers, robes and excellent lighting make bathing an extravagance.
Though only two rooms are officially designed for reduced mobility, all of them are spacious and can easily accommodate a wheelchair. Ground-floor options are easily the best choices.
Room service, provided by the friendly staff, is available 24 hours a day and includes a wide selection of hot and cold dishes, snacks and desserts. Other services include dry cleaning, a safe deposit box at the reception desk, babysitting services, gift shops and salons, and a hairdresser.
Strangled by tour groups and packaged rates, this resort town is often considered second-tier in terms of its hotel choices. But this luxury-minded lodging is a community unto itself with no real competition in this part of Morocco.
