Hotels were heavily damaged in the battles fought in Freetown during 1997-1999, so don't expect luxurious service or surroundings anywhere. We suggest staying in as nice a property as possible to minimize hassles. The truly adventurous may want to stay at one of the government rest houses (reservations can be made upon arrival through the Ministry of Interior). Located throughout the country, they're very primitive—guests must be entirely self-sufficient, taking along everything from food and water to a cot, mosquito net, dishes, lamps and kerosene stove.
