This park is one of the premier places on the Kona coast to see and experience early Hawaiian history. It features a large rock-walled enclosure that served as a place of refuge for war refugees, combatants, criminals and others who had broken kapu (taboos) and who sought safety and ritual cleansing inside its walls. There are also reconstructed heiaus and related buildings that were considered sacred in old Hawaii. Walk on royal grounds, visit the sea turtles, and play a game of konane on the beach. Open daily 7 am-8 pm. Visitors Center open daily 8 am-5 pm. US$5 per vehicle. Highway 160, Honaunau. Phone 808-328-2326. http://www.nps.gov/puho.
