This seafront village is home to more than Johnno's Beach Stop; it also is the launching point for many of Anguilla's boat races and has some interesting architecture and history. On the main road, for example, is the Old Manse, a photogenic, three-gabled house that dates from the early 1900s. Of similar age is the White House by Sandy Ground Salt Pond, an example of vernacular architecture with a cut-stone foundation, pitched roof and decorative railings and fretwork.
The Old Salt Factory and Pumphouse runs historic tours detailing the once-crucial salt industry on Anguilla. Tours Thursdays 10 am by appointment; donation suggested. Phone 497-2711. Sandy Ground also has a number of restaurants and bars, including Johnno's, the Pumphouse and some small inns.
