Salaspils has seen much suffering: A terrible battle nearby killed thousands in 1605, and more than 100,000 died in a Nazi concentration camp there.
The camp now is home to stark, grand sculptures and the Salaspils Memorial, where a sign reads, "Beyond these gates the earth moans." Today Salaspils is the site of Latvia's nuclear reactor.
