Spiegelrei 3, fronts a canal a few blocks from the Markt. This property fuses together five 17th-century burghers' homes to create one of Brugge's most elegant hostelries. This is every bit as good as Die Swaene, De Orangerie and De Tuilerieen. Its convenient but off-the-beaten-path location makes it more tranquil (it tends to attract a slightly older crowd). A cobblestone drive leads to the landscaped patio.
Inside, the hotel is well laid out and beautifully furnished, with fresh flowers at every turn and lovely antiques and art from the owner's private collection. The
vivid salmon-pink parlor glows with a fireplace. The restored mural in the study is of tooled Spanish leather, and two inviting canalside breakfast rooms with waiter service get the day off to a good start. The brick bar, also with a fireplace, entices locals with more than 30 varieties of beer. A third breakfast room is in a second building, and area restaurants are numerous.
Three small meeting rooms seat up to 30 in traditional environs with basic audiovisual equipment available. A business center offers the basic equipment including Internet access, but at a hefty hourly
charge. A rear garden has ivy-covered walls, mature trees, hedges and striking sculptures and flower beds.
Creaky but lovely carved staircases lead to some of the most spacious rooms in the city. The magazine-worthy guest quarters are simply but delightfully done. They are individually decorated with Flemish fabrics and colors, antiques, beautiful burnished armoires, tables and chairs, phones and TVs. Tiled baths have hand-held showers and hair dryers. Some rooms show exposed beams, carved accents, canal views and walk-in closets, and all suites and top-floor premium rooms are air-conditioned. Three baths boast whirlpool tubs. Small pets are permitted.
Room rates follow size rather than view, but even the standard rooms are large. Management inspects the rooms annually for necessary touchups keeping accommodations in tiptop shape. This hotel is open all year, room service runs from sunrise to midnight, and housekeeping and maintenance are thorough. Prices are higher here than most, but so are the standards.
