Destination Guidebook for Port Harcourt, Nigeria

Port Harcourt, Nigeria, is a large, industrial port city that offers little for tourists. Port Harcourt is the center for Nigeria's black gold—oil—which is pumped from the ground at the numerous oil instillations in the Niger Delta around Port Harcourt. Violent protests against foreign oil companies take place there, and frequent kidnappings of oil workers occur, making the region unsafe for visitors.

A local cemetery is rumored to be the burial site of the Ogoni Nine, a group of dissidents that included the writer Ken Saro-Wiwa, who were executed while campaigning for the rights of people living in the delta region in the 1990s.

Port Harcourt Airport is currently closed for extensive repairs. However, some airlines are using the Nigerian Air Force runway. 270 mi/435 km southeast of Lagos.
