We have to admit that Petit St. Vincent—referred to locally as PSV—(phone 954-963-7401 or toll-free 800-654-9326; http://www.psvresort.com) is our very favorite Grenadine, but if you start feeling a little queasy when you're away from a phone, television or e-mail, this is not the place for you: Most public information is sent by a unique flag system. The lack of telecommunication doesn't really matter, because the only messages you'll need to get across are specifics on how you'd like to be pampered. This private, informal island is a place for self-indulgent whims.
Supposedly, two-thirds of this 113-acre/46-hectare island is powdery beach, and we believe it. The water is blue or turquoise, and topless and nude sunbathing are very much accepted. The island's only resort boasts well-appointed, secluded bungalows spread along the beach and on the hillside. It is designed for privacy, and management stresses excellent service. This enchanting resort has room for only 21 couples, plus a resident staff of 75 that sees to the guests' needs. High points include good food, sailing facilities, tennis courts, and table-tennis and croquet equipment. As you might expect, such amenities and seclusion are quite expensive. No ferry service is scheduled to PSV, but guests are picked up on Union Island by the resort's own vessel for a 30-minute ride. Cruisers wishing to explore Petit St. Vincent can anchor off the southwestern end of the island, where there is a dinghy dock.
