This historic bar opened in 1854. Its longtime motto was "Good Ale, Raw Onions and No Ladies," but that was amended to "Good Ale and Raw Onions" when the ownership—prompted by a Supreme Court decision—decided it was time to allow customers with two X chromosomes—in 1970. There's still sawdust on the wood floor, and it still brews its own light and dark ales, both of which are recommended. Monday-Saturday 11 am-1 am, Sunday 1 pm-1 am. No cover. No credit cards. 15 E. Seventh St., between Second and Third avenues (subway line N or R to Eighth Street; 6 to Astor Place), Manhattan, New York City. Phone 212-474-9148. http://www.mcsorleysnewyork.com.
