New York Hotel Guide

Guide to New York Hotels

Visitors to New York will find every kind of accommodation available, from bare-bones budget lodging to inns and bed-and-breakfasts to the most sumptuous deluxe resorts and hotels. New Yorkers have long streamed into the Catskills, Adirondacks and the Hudson River Valley to take their leisure.

More recently, private estates have been transformed into resort properties, such as The Point (Upper Saranac Lake), once an Adirondack summer camp for one of the Rockefellers and now the epitome of rustic deluxe. Wealthy New Yorkers often vacation in the Catskills and the Hamptons. For a full New York experience, these are comfortable venues in which to find hotels.

There are still plenty of good Catskills resorts, but many of the classics have closed down, including Grossinger's. Health spas and ashrams are now popular in the region.

Many hotels offer a variety of seasonal and heritage packages. Sumptuous vacation resorts with all the amenities (including nightclubs) are found in several areas. Guests stay in grand hotels, chalets or cottages and spend their time in various recreational activities, including golf, tennis, skiing, fishing and boating. Accommodations in spa-rich Saratoga Springs range from Victorian bed-and-breakfasts to grand hotels with the opulent trappings of bygone eras.

Dude ranch resorts (yes, even in New York) focus on horses (instruction and trail riding), along with barbecues, square dancing and other organized activities.
