Richard Branson's private island, 2 km north of the northeastern flank of Virgin Gorda, is the Caribbean's most exclusive, and expensive, retreat.
Privacy is a given, as guests rent not just the mansion but the entire island. As expected from one of the world's greatest brand masters, this property leaves no afterthought behind. Originally designed to be his own family's private vacation hideaway, the island now welcomes guests when his family is not there.
Many guests arrive by helicopter after a transfer from nearby island airports. Poised like a castle atop Devil's Hill, the elegant main house, a 10-bedroom Balinese villa, has public areas backed by breathtaking marine views.
The living room has a snookers table, piano, games, and video and book collections. The sumptuous 26-person dining room sits underneath a cathedral ceiling. The employee-to-guest ratio is notable, yet no more than expected for these rates.
Varied amenities include a barbecue, two whirlpools, a lighted tennis court and three beaches. The magnificent freshwater pool features a cascade set amid boulders, and lounge chairs beckon nappers. Three motor launches, sailboards and snorkeling equipment are available from the beaches.
The master bedroom on the second story of the Great House has an outdoor bath with a whirlpool and a freestanding Victorian tub on the balcony. On the ground floor of this same house, nine other units include four
double bedrooms that can be combined into two suites. Five double bedrooms have adjoining baths and terraces equipped with hammocks.
The Great House boasts its own infinity pool, state-of-the-art kitchen and entertainment system with CD player. Two Balinese pagodas, Bali Hai and Bali Cliff, are farther down by the shore and share a pool and lounge area. The third, Bali Lo, lies closer to the main house and has its own pool. Mosquito netting demonstrates a conscientious effort to minimize discomfort. Every possible toiletry item is supplied for guests.
Pets are not permitted for fear that they may not get along well with the local wildlife (think: flamingos and lizards, oh my). This is not a walk-in resort, and prospective guests must
pay the full rental amount three months prior to visiting. Occasionally, the island can be rented for individual units, but this is a rarity.
Management and staff attend to guests' every whim, and with a 2-to-1 ratio, that is quite simple. Laundry is handled each night for free, and the all-inclusive rates make life as carefree as possible.
The late Princess of Wales, movie and TV stars, big-time rockers and CEOs have all done time here. Anyone who can afford these rates is certain to receive the same celebrity treatment.
