The restored house and grounds contain period furniture and photographs of Danish author Karen Blixen of Out of Africa fame, who used the pen name Isak Dinesen. The house was originally a coffee plantation out in the country, but now it finds itself on the outskirts of Nairobi. The quiet, tree-lined roads and older homes with large yards make this a pleasant place to visit. The Karen Blixen Coffee Gardens restaurant is just up the road, adjacent to a particularly interesting old settler's house. Daily 9:30 am-6 pm. 800 KSh adults. Karen Road (16 mi/25 km from the city center), Karen, Nairobi. Phone 882-779. http://www.karenblixen.com.
