This quiet town has a nice 14th-century church (with a stone chapel) and a good military museum. In Visulahti (4 mi/6 km from Mikkeli), visit Miniland (a sampling of Finnish architecture in miniature), the Automobile Exhibition (about 30 old cars) and the spectacular Kirkonvarkaus Suspension Bridge. A fascinating 12th-century graveyard lies in nearby Tuukkala. Local activities include canoeing, skiing, bicycling and windsurfing. Allow one night there. Mikkeli is 130 mi/210 km northeast of Helsinki.
