A quiet corner of the Society Islands, Maupiti lies 190 mi/300 km northwest of Papeete. Few people visit Maupiti because there are no first-class hotels (visitors stay in simple guesthouses or with local families), but its lagoon and white-sand beaches are picturesque. Those who truly want to relax and learn about French Polynesian culture will enjoy it. We suggest three nights, but be aware that there's really nothing in the way of entertainment or commercial tourist attractions.
