On Leverick Bay, facing the sound to Prickly Pear Island, this beachfront resort is less than 10 minutes north of Gun Creek Pier. It has more facilities than you'd expect from a 20-room hotel: a restaurant, beach bar, tennis court, pool, great dive shop, marina, spa, market, art gallery and shop.
Reception is solely for check-in. The independent nautical-theme restaurant and bar are a hit with sailors who love such fodder as steak and kidney pie. Fresh seafood also steals the limelight.
Poolside dining features more casual fare such as sandwiches, pizza and salads. Oceanfront beverage service is always on call. Pusser's Store does brisk business selling rum and souvenirs while a small Internet cafe proffers high-speed connections for a fee.
Amusements include basking on the beachside pool deck, taking diving lessons, getting a massage, and playing tennis on the single court, which sports a fine synthetic-grass surface (the only fitness option since there is no gym).
A short stretch of beach sits between the pier and a jetty, more a place to land the Hobie Cats than for swimming or sunning.
Scattered over the steep hill facing North Sound, the 14 air-conditioned guest quarters are housed in yellow townhouse-style buildings topped with red roofs. These basic middle-grade lodgings are nothing fancy, just a standard assemblage of bamboo and rattan furniture, glass-topped tables, swag lamps, ceiling fans and furnished balconies.
All are equipped with shower-only baths, refrigerators, coffeemakers, phones, paired double beds and louvered closets. Tiled floors keep rooms cool thanks to constant air conditioning.
Upper-level rooms are preferable for their cathedral ceilings, but all come with air conditioning. The four condominiums have TVs, paired double beds and sliding glass doors that open on wraparound verandas with expansive views.
Complimentary wireless high-speed Internet access is now available in all guest rooms, and suites boast CD players and sleeper sofas.
Pets are not permitted. Room service is lacking, and housekeeping stops by every day except Sunday.
Those who have trouble walking or are without transport will bemoan the 91 steps from the lower road to the upper accommodations. Service-oriented guests will be discouraged to learn of the self-initiated activity here, but informed guests are well-prepared.
