This hotel, a 3-hectare compound in a smart residential area, 2 km from the Circuit de la Palmeraie via a bumpy dirt road toward Dour Abiad, 10 km from Bab Doukhala and the medina, 15 minutes from the airport, is emblematic of the new wave of small, service-oriented design-hotels here. Designed by Charles Boccara, the innovative architect of the Melia Tichka Salam, Les Deux Tours offers similar style on a smaller, more personal scale. Unlike the famed riads of this charming city, this property sprawls out across numerous buildings, bringing guests through its lush gardens to reach the villas.
The hotel's namesake towers not only provide support for the iron gates at the entrance, but also are the only indicator for arriving guests; there are no signs, and in this enclave of celebrity mansions, there are more than a few private residences grander than this lazy palm-studded retreat. And lazy seems to be a keyword here; there is little more for guests to do than read, swim, indulge in the hammam or get a massage. Wrapped like a gilded gewgaw from Gumps, the gracious, highly manicured gardens shade and color the stone pathways that ramble about the property, which is composed of six
sumptuous modern villas that look like they have been around for at least 300 years.
A small vine-covered stucco building at the entrance sets the tone of the place, with its informal open-air sitting room where guests register and provide the management with lists of their wants and needs—it is safe to say that nothing here is unattainable. A frequent response to guests' requests is "This is your house" as they are being welcomed with the traditional cup of steaming mint tea.
Public areas are composed of small furnished loggias, patios, shaded terraces and lawns, where meals and drinks are served. There is no formal dining room. Breakfast is often taken in the rooms, lunch is always served under an arbor by the pool, and dinner is a matter of preference, though social meals are promoted at large tables set under the trees in the garden.
The solemn, medieval-looking hammam is fitted with jewel-tone tiles, and massage and beauty treatments
are available. A handsomely furnished lawn and furnished sundeck surround the sparkling pool, and each of the villas provides guests with a small private garden and a plunge pool. Complimentary wireless high-speed Internet access is available throughout the restaurant, bar and lounge areas, and a public computer provides Internet access.
Originally intended for sale as private residences, the six individually decorated villas have been divided into two suites and two standard rooms, with a common dining room and lounge—often with a fireplace. Guests in each also share the plunge pool and garden. No two villas—or rooms, for that matter—are alike. Each, however, infuses an elegant, yet relaxed, style that showcases the work of Moroccan masons and painters and the zany influences of Mr. Boccara, whose custom-designed appointments and tastefully chosen antiques blend to create intoxicating Oriental interiors. A blend of modern sophistication and local innocence purveys the entire place. All rooms have paired twin or queen beds and spectacular tiled baths with lots of towels, locally produced toiletries, and large showers, deep tubs or both. Phones, safes and air-conditioning are the only
modern conveniences—there are no TVs or minibars. Fresh flowers, intricately designed furnishings, freshly painted walls, hand-woven rugs and indigenous artwork provide a residential touch.
Standard rooms are smallish, but with their access to sitting and dining rooms, they are more than adequate. The preferred choice here is to rent an entire villa, although a suite with a terrace (most have them) is a fine alternative. Flat-screen TVs and DVD players are available in suites. Guests in standard rooms often find that they lack privacy, since courtyards can be shared with neighbors.
Pets are permitted. Room service answers hunger calls until midnight. Housekeeping does a fine job, especially in providing homemade touches such as sprinkling flower petals on the bed or lighting candles for effect. Service never stops at this delightful and very tranquil retreat set in one of Morocco's most enticing and prestigious locations.
