Leptis Magna Travel Guide

Leptis Magna Guide Overview

Even those who have no interest in ruins will be impressed by Leptis Magna, arguably the most impressive Roman site in North Africa. Overlooking the Mediterranean, Leptis Magna contains some of the best-preserved Roman ruins in the world (it has been designated a World Heritage Site). The birthplace of Emperor Septimius Severus, the city first gained importance 2,000 years ago, during the reign of the Roman emperors Augustus and Tiberius. The site is very large, but be sure to inspect the Baths of Hadrian, the Arch of Septimius Severus, the Imperial Forum, the New Basilica, the Nymphaeum, the theater and the colonnaded street. The port area is also interesting if you have time. Plan a full day's excursion from Tripoli. 80 mi/130 km east of Tripoli, near the town of Khums.
