This business favorite wins for its friendly staff, waterfront location and classy operation. At inspection in late 2007, construction on the exterior was under way to improve the facilities and all-day work may disturb jetlagged travelers.
The compact lobby is a bit of a disappointment, although there is plenty of seating available, and the sea views are lovely. Sit-down reception is the norm, and a speedy concierge handles individual needs.
The all-day cafe reached by a staircase one level below the lobby serves international fare buffet-style in a contemporary atmosphere. Weekend champagne brunches are not to be missed, and Arabic meze favorites are always available to remind guests of their Gulf location. Spicy Latin delicacies in Paloma attract the locals with sizzling meats, mouthwatering
fajitas, and a chef-created Brazilian salad that wins raves from repeat diners. The seafood restaurant serves up fresh catches of the day while the Italian dining room is a consistent winner. A long wine list makes for some creative food pairings. Poolside dining and lobby lounge coffee or drinks are both regularly available. Live music in many of the restaurants adds a touch of class and excitement.
The resort-style pool grounds are impressive with ample space for enjoying a good book while soaking up some rays. The large pool is criss-crossed by a central bridge that overlooks the bar and snack shop. Secluded seating closer to the waterfront proves popular for those looking for more peace and quiet since families overcrowd it on weekends (local memberships are available). Two tennis courts and two squash courts supplement the fitness center for aerobic diversions. A sauna and spa menu provides opportunity for relaxation while
those traveling with children can spend time at the kids' pool.
Meetings are a popular occurrence here, and space for nearly 1,000 guests is available. A business center serves technical needs, and wireless high-speed Internet access run throughout the public areas. Parking surrounds the front entrance, and a shuttle runs within the surrounding area on a set schedule.
The accommodations are tasteful and traditional with pale yellow and blue fabrics, fine carpeting, and modern facilities including cable TVs, high-speed Internet access, safes, and phones with voice mail and data ports. Many rooms cannot hold a candle to the renovated Sheraton rooms or those at the nearby Four Seasons, but king or queen beds are spread with soft linens and down-stuffed duvets and pillows. Fresh flowers, fruit and bottled water
are daily additions. Baths supply European toiletries, scales, hair dryers, makeup mirrors, strong showers and water closets.
Club-level guests benefit from complimentary services including breakfast, Internet access and evening snacks. All guests enjoy turndown service and twice-daily housekeeping. Pets are not permitted, and smoking is only allowed in specific rooms. At all hours, guests can hail a snack from room service.
This hotel is best known for its views and its expansive recreational options, but it is otherwise quite unremarkable, but a night either here or at the Sheraton will result in the same satisfaction and are better options than the distant Marriott.
