Tucked into the trees at the edge of Penobscot Bay, off Route 1, 4 miles north of Camden, this scenic contemporary inn is a subdued seaside retreat that is sailing soundly in calm seas. This is a traditional bed-and-breakfast in every sense of the word with the bright, contemporary accommodations and sunny breakfast room the lion's share of the operation. Keep in mind that very few Maine inns offer such close proximity to the water.
Guests drive along a dirt road to a heavily wooded 4-acre estate on the bay's rocky shore. Anchoring the cluster of buildings is a handsome restored cape from the 1920s, with comfortable sitting areas, big windows, a terrace facing
the lawns and bay, and a modern conservatory that feels like a convection oven in the height of summer. This often scorching sunroom is the most popular perch at breakfast time. Those with the munchies will find snacks lain out all day.
The adjoining terrace and lawn offer spectacular views that inspire relaxation and reflection. The cherrywood library holds as many movies as novels, but it is still a pleasant retreat, especially by the fireplace.
Corporate retreats are popular, and the owners wittingly require such gatherings to book the
entire hotel. Pets are not permitted.
Accommodations are in the main house and in four cottages scattered around the grounds. The attractive guest rooms have wood-burning fireplaces, hidden TVs, double, queen, or king beds, ocean views, and private baths with robes.
Cottages feature minibars, private decks and double whirlpool tubs. The best pick remains the FitzHugh Lane Cottage, whose guests hear the bay lapping outside the window. It is the closest thing to a houseboat you'll find around Camden.
The Wyeth Loft, however, provides a spacious and sunny abode for those who require room to move. One unit has a kitchenette, dining area, and a washer and dryer that are perfect for weeklong stays. Disabled travelers are accommodated, but gravel walkways make wheelchair movement difficult. Smoking is allowed outdoors. The inn is not appropriate for children.
Among the bevy of traditional establishments here, this coolly contemporary house stands out.
