Located in the best area of this resort city, this hotel is convenient to most of the major attractions, including the Roman ruins and Carthage. Spread over four bungalows along a white sandy beach, this place is one of the nicer hotels in this sun-drenched area. Even so, it promises a bit more than it delivers.
The cool white exterior is typical of Tunisian style, and the cool lobby is inviting. New arrivals are greeted with a glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice.
There are several dining options, and the traditional Tunisian cuisine that is served here is good but not outstanding. Guests may do better dining at one of the local restaurants, where both the food and the prices are superior. The El Kahena offers both a la carte and buffet dining for breakfast and dinner in a bright, cheerful atmosphere. During the summer months, steaks and fresh seafood are available
in the oceanview Beach Barbecue restaurant for lunch. The Noodle Bar features pizza in a casual atmosphere during the afternoon hours. Guests can get a cool refreshment at the Swim-up Poolside Bar. Beverages are available at the Lounge Bar and Cafe, and the Zanzibar nightclub offers a limited a la carte menu during the winter season along with live music and entertainment every night.
Although rather small for the size of the hotel, the garden and pool area is a relaxing place to spend a day. The hotel offers tennis, a gym, a sauna and access to sailing, water skiing, snorkeling, dune skiing, camel trekking and paragliding. Complimentary transportation and special rates are available to two nearby championship golf courses.
Staffers are friendly and will go out of their way to arrange trips to local sites or one of the many adventure activities. The
hotel is well-situated for day trips to Carthage, Sidi Bou Said village, Kairouan Old Mosques and Dougga Theater. It is also a good jumping off point for a safari in the Sahara desert.
The hotel's conference room seats up to 100 people classroom style. Business services include faxing, photocopying, translating and Internet connection.
In the accommodations, the domed brick ceilings, white walls, cheerful decorations and colorful fabrics are inviting. Unfortunately, not all of the rooms are in good repair. In many cases, the carpeting and upholstery could use an updating. On the plus side, the rooms are spacious and provide a separate sitting area and a comfortable balcony with a pool or sea view. Standard amenities run to phones with data ports, air conditioning and 19-inch satellite TVs. In most rooms, there is no desk or work area, but the sitting area can accommodate
a laptop computer (all outlets are 220 volts). The unremarkable combination baths come with double sinks and hair dryers. The suites have desks along with a larger sitting area and a refrigerator.
Although none of the rooms is listed as handicapped-friendly, all are spacious enough to accommodate guests in wheelchairs or those with limited mobility. A large elevator affords access to the rooms. The agreeable staffers make arrangements for special needs. Room service runs round the clock. Requests for smoke-free rooms may or may not be honored.
This hotel is comfortable and the rates are reasonable, and the offerings are a step up from the nearby Marina Palace Hotel. Even so, the moniker "resort" may be overstating the case.
