Professional Review for Hyatt Regency Casablanca

Exterior

This hotel, in a central location by the medina, at the end of Av. de L'Armee Royale, prevails as the undisputed leader in Casablanca for business and leisure travelers alike. The massive 11-story yellow and red landmark stands in awkward contrast to the blinding white architecture that predominates in this city.

The chic lobby is artfully layered with glossy black granite and smoky mirrors that reflect fine regional accents and antiques. Seating is sumptuous and modern with warm velvety fabrics and subdued lighting reflecting off the mahogany furnishings.

The Bar Casablanca is a major production built around the silver-screen classic, but the bric-a-brac decor and movie memorabilia give it a silly Hard Rock Cafe kind of feel. Thankfully, a cozy fireplace is the saving grace. A new bar complete with swanky decor and a more low-key atmosphere was being planned at inspection. Snacks are available throughout the day, and a resident jazz band plays nightly except Sunday. More elaborate meals are taken in a tent-style Moroccan restaurant with low tables, lamps and traditional belly dancer entertainment. A buffet restaurant, outdoor barbecue and Continental fusion dining room provide more variety than any other hotel in town.

Guests lounging by the pool need not dress to eat at the poolside bar and grill, but a dress code is in force at the popular disco. Shops are strung along a lobby wing. The pool adjoins the solarium, squash courts draw devotees, and separate hammams serve men and women. The garden holds a gigantic chess game, and Moroccan Michael Jordans play pick-up on the resurfaced indoor half-court.

Many of the city's chicest get-togethers are in these superlative function rooms (capacity Room700). The excellent business center is open six days a week, and 24-hour valet parking is a nice perk.

Electronic locks provide access to the city's finest guest quarters, each with generous proportions, fine contemporary hardwood furniture, and sophisticated fabrics in bright shades of salmon and gold. There are few indications of North African influence in the decor unless one peers from the window at the surrounding city and distant mosques. The new bedding, part of Hyatt's overall global upgrade, provides Simmons mattresses with pillow-top covers, deluxe linens and plenty of pillows. Lovely paneled chests disguise minibars, sitting areas have breakfast tables and single armchairs with ottomans, and etched-glass doors slide open to small but well-stocked marble baths with granite vanities, stall showers, oversized tubs, WCs, robes, slippers and deluxe toiletries. Standard are large desks, three phones with data ports, TVs, laptop-sized safes, mirrored closets, and one king or Restauranttwo twin beds.

At inspection, wireless Internet was planned for guest rooms following its recent installation in the lobby and suites. Regency Club guests enjoy upgraded accommodations offering up more space and access to the elegant lounge for breakfast and all-day drinks and snacks.

Room service never stops. The dapper, attentive English-speaking staff is exemplary, but hits a few speed bumps when it comes to executing on even the most basic requests such as late checkout or concierge services. Shoppers appreciate access to the nearby souk for souvenirs, especially when time is at a premium thanks to business meetings. Executives and American tour groups flying into and out of the city are the bulk of the guests.

Global Hyatt Corporation offers more than 735 hotels and resorts in more than 44 countries. Its brand extensions include Park Hyatt, Grand Hyatt, Hyatt Regency, Hyatt Resorts, Hyatt Hotel, Hyatt Place, Hyatt Summerfield Suites and the recently launched Andaz. The Global Hyatt Corporation also owns Hawthorn Suites and Microtel Inns & Suites.

Park Hyatt is a chain of 23 full-service luxury hotels that can be found in major cities worldwide. The chain just opened a new location in Beijing in 2007 and is expected to open six more hotels in 2008. Amenities are specific to each hotel and include location-specific extravagancies such as complimentary designer 2007 Audi A8 L sedans (Washington), private art collection, beauty salon, licensed doctor on-call 24 hours, international videoconferencing (Tokyo), floral boutique, babysitting (Buenos Aires), and heated bath floor and marble bath (Moscow). Locations typically offer high-speed Internet, valet parking, 24-hour business center, multilingual staff, dry cleaning, laundry and pressing, complimentary shoe shine, daily newspaper, fitness center, swimming pool, 24-hour room service, cable/satellite TV, concierge service, dual-line phones, guest room thermostat, robes, and on-site bar and restaurant.

Grand Hyatt is a chain of 28 luxury business hotels around the world. Designed for leisure and corporate travelers, the Grand Hyatt accommodates large-scale meetings and conventions in a refined setting with state-of-the-art technology and world-class facilities for banquets and conferences. Amenities typically include a variety of restaurants, cafes and bars, lobby lounges, medium- to large-size meeting space, ballrooms, 24-hour secretarial and meeting assistance, modern fitness centers and fitness experts.

Hyatt Regency features classic, contemporary design and caters primarily to the business traveler. Individual business travelers and major conferences are accommodated at Hyatt Regency Hotels with extensive meeting and conference centers, state-of-the-art business centers, fitness centers, restaurants, bars and Hyatt’s Signature Regency Club.

Hyatt Resorts is a title added to Grand Hyatt, Hyatt Regency and Hyatt Hotel locations. Hyatt resorts cater to family and individual leisure travel. They focus on reflecting the local culture of each hotel’s surrounding area whether in architecture or through the use of locally grown ingredients in spa treatments. Each resort also features gourmet regional cuisine in its on-site restaurants. Golf or Adventure vacation packages are available for many of the Hyatt Resort locations.

Hyatt Place is a new addition to the Hyatt family of hotels. The chain caters to today’s traveler through modern design and quality service. Spacious guest rooms feature 42-inch flat-panel HD TVs, the signature Hyatt Grand Bed, sleeper-sofa, separate seating area and complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi Internet access available throughout the hotel. Guests can purchase hot breakfast entrees and Starbucks coffee or choose a free

So far the Andaz London is the fledgling chain's only location, but two hotels in New York and one in Austin, Texas are expected to open soon. The brand name focuses on "simple luxuries and unexpected details" and follows the trend of an ever-growing boutique influence in chain hotels. In terms of cost and luxury it should be somewhere between the Grand Hyatt and Park Hyatt.
