Part of the Icelandair group, this hotel in southwestern Iceland offers a complete Icelandic experience, as well as excellent cuisine in a rustic setting. The hotel is an easy one-hour drive from Reykjavik.
The restaurant, overlooking the river and endless mountains, has a fine menu and more than 50 kinds of wines. Breakfast
is included in the room tariff. On the second level, there is a cozy bar, sitting area and small conference room.
The knowledgeable staff guides guests to hiking, glaciers, horseback riding, salmon fishing, river rafting and trips to the Westmann Islands, which was covered by lava in the 1970s.
The hotel, originally a fishing lodge, is composed of two wings of rooms, in log cabin style. The standard rooms are small, but they offer comfortable beds, good pillows and bright reading lights. The baths all have whirlpool tubs. The deluxe rooms are larger and add a sofa. All rooms have thick terry robes, and most have a small veranda overlooking the river. Guests may use the two hot tubs outside the verandas.
The nearby town has only a sprinkling of houses. This is a good place to see the Northern Lights, but not in the summer.
