This budget time-share hotel is situated as if it were a luxury property, on its own islet reached via a three-minute trip on a launch from the pier next to the King Christian. For the price, this place is worth consideration by budget travelers who don't mind slipshod maintenance and a general lack of amenities. Surprisingly, this hotel is not a particular hotspot for young people, despite its lively, social setting.
There are some bright spots here. The restaurant down by the pool is serving meals again, the guest rooms are at least air-conditioned and fitted with kitchenettes, and riding the free ferry is a novelty for most. The ferry runs regularly from 6 am to midnight and after hours, guests returning
from Christiansted must call the lobby for pickup.
There are still a lot of glaring deficiencies. The three tennis courts are maimed beyond redemption, guest rooms need new furnishings, and low occupancies can make this place seem deserted at times. Beyond that, the hotel rarely rises above budget level.
In addition to the main restaurant, a dark intimate cocktail lounge opens to a terrace. Most guests pass up the pool for the wide, sandy (and often littered) beach, which is a popular spot for locals and other guests from Christiansted's other hotels. The Tuesday-night all-you-can-eat
barbecue draws many with its lively entertainment of Mocko Jumbies (West Indian stilt dancing, popularized at Carnival), dancing and fire-throwing. Guests interested in having their own barbeques may use grills located on a terrace.
There is a new Water Tour shop on premises that offers tours, snorkel gear, water runners, banana boat and kayak rentals.
The three-story hotel (sorry, no elevators) is built around a narrow courtyard with open galleries, and rooms feature excellent views on all sides. Modern tropical decor enlivens the air-conditioned guest rooms fitted with wicker armchairs, worn dressers and tables, TVs on wall ledges, low double beds, and small laminate baths. Hot water is not a given. All rooms have kitchenettes with microwave ovens, refrigerators, toasters and coffeemakers. Rooms open to rusty metal-railed balconies with harbor or garden vistas. Rooms in the -001 to -009 series feature the best views of the harbor and ferry dock, and those in the -016 to -022 block boast the best of the yacht anchorage.
Housekeeping and maintenance are efficient, the staff is polite, and the concierge is a minister of information.
