This hotel, in a superb location at the edge of a shaded neighborhood, is considered by some tour operators who prefer smaller properties to be the finest hotel in Marrakech. Individuals, too, find peace in the heart of Es Saadi, but this hotel's reputation for excellent service, style and sumptuous boutique accommodations takes the true spotlight. This pastel, eight-story hotel has built up a loyal repeat clientele over the years and is well-booked year-round.
A thin red Moroccan runner leads to the entrance, beyond which lies the bright lobby with wide picture windows that open onto the pool. The jovial reception staff and hall porters make visitors feel immediately at home. Their bungling can be charming, or annoying, depending on one's mood,
but it is clear that genuine hospitality is the ultimate goal.
The well-regarded restaurant serves international selections as well as poolside buffets made lovelier with inspiring garden vistas. Other amenities include a poolside snack bar, nightclub, tiny casino with slot machines, two clay tennis courts, a driving range, Turkish bath, sauna, outdoor massage service, hairdressers and shops. Lush landscaping and thickly padded chaises longues border the large freeform pool, but the palm tree on the little island has only weeds for company. Well-designed cabanas nestle poolside. The meeting room seats 300, although business services are a tad limited.
The spacious, air-conditioned guest quarters feature an array of color schemes ranging from drab gray and dark blue to vibrant Monet-inspired floral tones in green and yellow. Efficiently appointed, each unit has a marble-topped desk, minibar, phone, TV, firm twin or double beds, a roomy mirrored closet with a safe, and a balcony furnished with deteriorating plastic chairs. Hair dryers, robes and marvelously scented toiletries fill luxurious marble and tiled baths with spacious vanities, detailed etch work and even under-floor heating in some. Some of the fabrics and carpets could use replacement, but overall, the level of maintenance here is very high. Suites are designer indulgences with stone floors and walls, Oriental rugs and intricate furnishings far more lavish than traditional rooms. Ten villas are in the works, boasting exotic Moorish architecture and lush, manicured gardens designed to cater to privacy seekers. They feature amenities such as whirlpool tubs, large chandeliers, butler service and a private heated pool. Many are already open, including the lavish Sultan's Villa, dripping with palatial opulence.
Soundproofing is weak, especially considering the disco nearby keeps everyone awake. The owner and her beautiful golden cocker spaniel can be seen walking the halls, ensuring that the staff is on its toes. A favorite of NASA personnel stationed out in the hinterlands, this hotel has been setting the standard for Moroccan-run hotels for years.
