This smart boutique-hotel is situated in the port of Morondava, about 400 km from the capital, Antananarivo, though most tourists arrive by air. It lies on a long, sandy spit of land called Nosy Kely, which runs southward from the town center, flanked by the Indian Ocean to the west and a mangrove-lined tidal river to the east.
Reached from the main road through Nosy Kely, the hotel has an unremarkable whitewashed exterior, and the small reception area is also strictly functional. The bar and dining area, by contrast, is very attractive, spread across a stilted wooden platform overlooking the mangrove-lined river, and leading toward a large pool deck surrounded by shaded tables. The restaurant is widely regarded to be among the best in Madagascar, majoring in locally caught seafood, though the meat and poultry dishes are also superb.
The main attraction around Morondava is the Avenue des Baobabs, which lies about 30-45 minutes' drive from the town center and consists of several dozen magnificent baobab trees set among a group of shallow lakes that offer much to bird-watchers. It is best at sunrise or sunset, when the baobabs form amazing silhouettes against the reddening sky, and is often combined with a visit to the nearby Kirindy Reserve, where a variety of lemurs and birds can be seen alongside Madagascar's largest carnivore, the elusive fossa. Morondava town has a lively market and faded colonial charm, the beach is fantastic, and the hotel can organize fishing, rafting and snorkeling excursions, as well as trips to the baobabs.
The standard rooms are comfortably furnished, with twin or double beds, tiled floors, satellite TVs, minibars, air-conditioning and en-suite hot
showers. The older rooms in the main building tend to be a little cramped and stuffy, whereas those in the annex are more spacious and airy, with wooden floors, cane ceilings, and private balconies facing the river and leading out to the pool.
This is widely regarded to be the best of a string of midrange hotels running either side of the main road through Nosy Kely. Its best feature is undoubtedly the riverside deck and restaurant, but the larger rooms are also very pleasant, the service and food are exceptional, and it offers a great selection of excursions in and around this small coastal town.
