This boutique operation occupies the restored 1893 Railways Administration building, adjacent to bustling Spencer Street Station and Telstra Dome, home to Australia Rules Football. Operated by Sofitel, this "all-suite" operation feels a bit more like a trumped-up Mecure Hotel than anything by Sofitel.
In keeping with the historic pedigree here, management would like to think this place stands beside the elegant Windsor in the ranks, but that is far from the truth. This is a middle-of-the-road traditional hotel with a hard working top-hatted doorman and a lovely period facade.
The driveway centers around a fountain and leads to a modest entrance with a glass dome. The trim reception area has rich carpets and period lighting and adjoins a pleasant library-style lounge. Maintenance is productive, but the decor is half-baked; classic leather wingbacks are parked beside Wal-Mart-quality furniture. The dining room serves contemporary French fare, but again, offers uninspiring seating and poorly executed design.
Recreational pursuits are a highlight here, with a gym, heated pool with a retractable canopy and a sauna. Business services are always available, and meeting space can host groups
of up to 70 delegates. Valet parking incurs a modest charge. Pets are not permitted.
The guest suites, comprised of studios and one- and two-bedroom units, are decked out in light jewel tones. A recent refurbishment has created a smarter look in the bedrooms including new carpets and beds. They offer complete kitchens, phones with data ports, Internet access, minibars, all sorts of bed configurations, and generous closets.
Smart baths vary from suite to suite; some are marble, some have stall showers, and others are combination models. The hotel is now entirely smoke-free, and one room is designed for guests with disabilities. Room service is always on call.
This adequate choice occupies a convenient location, just across the river from the casino, but the level of quality is a disappointment—especially for anyone arriving here because of its Sofitel affiliation.
