Gotland Island Travel Guide

Gotland Island Guide Overview

Surrounded by beaches and white cliffs, Gotland is Sweden's largest island (110 mi/170 km long and 30 mi/50 km wide). The weather is fairly mild, and it's a good place for beach-combing, watersports and relaxation. It's where many Swedes vacation.

Gotland's main attraction is Visby, the island's capital. Attractions in this walled, medieval city include museums and church ruins. Visitors can interact with knights and damsels during the spectacular medieval festival held the first week of August. History-minded travelers should also visit the Viking necropolis, the prehistoric cultural area of Gervide Gard and the 12th-century convent of Roma. Spelunkers will enjoy seeing the dramatic stalactites and stalagmites in Lummelunda Caves. Nature lovers won't want to miss a trip to the stony shores of Faro, a northern island easily reached by car.

The best way to get around Gotland is by rented bicycle. The island is easily accessible from the rest of the country: Modern car ferries whisk travelers back and forth between Gotland and Nynashamn (just south of Stockholm) or Oskarshamn (west on the mainland). There is also daily air service from Stockholm and Malmo. Gotland is 100 mi/160 km south of Stockholm.
