Professional Review for Golden Tulip Kapok

Room

In a relatively tranquil location at the northwest corner of Queen's Park Savannah, just off the road to Maraval, this property is the best value in Trinidad. Thanks to the Miss Universe Pageant that swung through town a few years ago, this hotel underwent its own impressive makeover. Facilities rival those at the Hilton and Crowne Plaza but are available here at less than half the price.

The square building, striped horizontally with window-walls, is entered through a sharp lobby, with oak-wrapped columns and chic residential appointments in the cozy lounge. Unfortunately, the crisp modern design stops here.

An elevator rises to the rooftop Tiki Village restaurant—a Trinidadian Trader Vic's. The Chinese and Polynesian cooking is noteworthy, as are the dim sum and the sunset views over the treetops to the sea. This large restaurant is one of the property's best features and worth a visit even for nonguests. Live music accompanies dinner on weekends. A nice complimentary Continental breakfast is served here, or guests can order off a simple breakfast menu. The small, pleasant bar, Bois Cano, proves to be a splendid retreat, offering great appetizers, imported wines and espresso indoors or in the adjacent small courtyard.

The pool in back is small and unexciting, tucked among flowering plants gracing the terra-cotta terrace and flaming bougainvillea cascading from the balconies. Caged parrots add an exotic tone, and steps Poolrise to a semiprivate sun terrace. A small gym adds to the recreational options, and nearby Queen's Park has a jogging path.

The two meeting rooms seat 75 conferees total, and the business center is open during limited hours. Wireless and DSL Internet access is available but at an inflated cost, and the business center grants access on a computer terminal for slightly more.

The large, air-conditioned accommodations are nicely furnished in tropical wicker and sport bright island fabrics. Most boast spacious sitting areas, combination baths with hair dryers, and fine exposures. Nice features are twin, double, queen or king beds, satellite TVs, and phones with Lobbyvoice mail and data ports. Studios with kitchenettes are well worth the few extra dollars over the standards, although they don't offer that much more floor space. Upper-level rooms should be requested for their sunset views and their quiet (the hotel fronts a busy street). Six suites offer corner balconies and an attached studio. Complimentary breakfast, morning coffee and turndown are standard perks for all guests. Room service runs until 10 pm.

This business hotel has some attractive features, but it ranks well behind the Hilton and the Crowne Plaza, and indeed only the charm of the restaurant keeps it in league with the Courtyard by Marriott.
