This now unpopulated site in the desert is thought to have been Garama, the capital of the Kingdom of Garamantes, mentioned by Herodotus and other ancient writers. The earliest artifacts date back to the first millennium BC. Don't miss the Archaeological Museum. The remains of an ancient necropolis are south of the town. We recommend that, before trekking to Germa, you read The Garamantes of Southern Libya by Charles Daniels (Oleander Press). Near Germa are the incredible Ubari sand dunes and prehistoric rock carvings in the Messak Settafet mountain range. 410 mi/660 km south of Tripoli (80 mi/130 km southwest of Sabha).
