The historic center of Calvinism, Debrecen is known for its 19th-century Great Church. At one time, only card-carrying Calvinists were allowed to live in Debrecen. Also of historic interest are the Reformed College, an important Calvinist institution, and the Deri Museum (Hungarian and other art). For an interesting day trip, drive 24 mi/40 km west of Debrecen to Hortobagy, a village surrounded by horse pastures that resembles the pampas in Argentina. Debrecen is 120 mi/195 km east of Budapest.
