All levels of hotels are available in Asmara and Massawa. Tourist-class hotels are being built in some provincial towns, but for the most part, facilities in smaller towns will be very basic. Foreigners have to pay in foreign currency at most top-end places and should verify service charges and sales taxes when inquiring about rates. To minimize inconveniences, stay in as deluxe a property as possible, though many of the simple, family-run pensions offer good value and friendly service.
