Most people make a stop in El Jem to see the well-preserved Roman coliseum. Visitors are allowed to climb to the top rows of the coliseum as well as walk through underground passages where gladiators and animals were kept before they entered the arena. The local museum is also interesting, particularly the mosaics that were unearthed from local villas. El Jem is halfway between Sousse and Sfax on the main road and rail line. 115 mi/185 km south of Tunis.
