This is the city's most historic hotel, a renovated beauty in the heart of downtown that attracts many a wanderer strolling through to admire the stained-glass dome and ornate marble lobby. Columns, corbels, caps and gargoyles festoon this limestone building, a Romanesque confection dating from 1885. (The north side of the exterior was deliberately left unadorned as a snub to the North.)
