There's limited international cuisine. Deluxe hotels in Khartoum are the best bet for good Continental-style food, but be prepared to pay dearly. Chinese and Middle Eastern restaurants can also be found.
The local food is lightly spiced and quite tasty. Most meals include roasted meat served with vegetables and fruit, though Nile perch and tilapia may also be available early in the day. The Sudanese vegetable and peanut soup (called shorba) is very tasty, as is the tomato and ground beef dish (maschi). Karkadi, a nonalcoholic fruit juice (similar to black-currant juice), tastes fabulous served either cold at poolside on a hot day or as tea on a cool night. The uglyfruit (a giant grapefruit) is also quite refreshing.
