The food is African with a definite Portuguese influence and is quite good. Try to sample as much of the local cuisine as possible. The national dish, called calulu, is made of fish and green leafy vegetables. Other dishes you'll come across include octopus, calamari, feijoada (fish and bean stew), moleo de peixe (more fish with vegetables) and grilled fish (particularly, tuna, marlin and red snapper). Tropical fruits—such as guavas, papayas, starfruit, mangos and tamarinds—are also good. Beware of the red peppers (malagueta) unless you're practiced at eating flaming embers. Sao Tomeans boast that their peppers are the hottest in the world—take their word for it!
