Shop for antiques, furniture, textiles, crystal and other glass products, porcelain, silver products, jewelry, stainless-steel flatware, furs, cheese, amber and sweaters. Copenhagen's Stroget, the pedestrian shopping street, offers 1 mi/1.6 km of designer and specialty shops.
The American-style mall is a newer concept in Denmark, but one of the largest, Fisketorvet, is located one train stop from the main train station in Copenhagen. Overlooking one of the city's major canals, it includes a wide variety of shops, restaurants and a cinema.
Shopping Hours: Monday-Thursday 9 am-5:30 pm, Friday 10 am-8 pm, Saturday 9 am-1 pm. Stores are open the first Saturday of every month 9 am-5 pm.
Day By Day
The shortest visit to Denmark should be a week (with both weekends), but there's plenty more to do and see if time permits. We suggest the following minimum itinerary, which allows a visitor to meet both urban and rural residents and get a good idea of what Denmark is like:
Day 1—Arrive Copenhagen.
Day 2—Copenhagen. Begin with a stroll through Nyhavn and then walk out along the quayside to find the Little Mermaid statue. Later, visit Tivoli Gardens, an exciting theme park for all ages, with many excellent places to eat or chill out with a beer.
Day 3—Copenhagen. Visit the city's sites, such as the Round Tower, the palaces and the museums. Be sure to stroll down Stroget: It may be a shopping street, but it's also a place for impromptu street entertainment.
Day 4—Take a half-day trip to Elsinore to see Hamlet's Castle. Drive to Sjaellands Odde and board the hydrofoil ferry to Ebeltoft in Jutland. Be sure to see the old town while you're there.
Day 5—Drive to Aarhus and see Den Gamle By (The Old Town).
Day 6—Drive to Billund to see Legoland.
Day 7—Continue to Ribe to see the cathedral and Viking Museum. If you have time, take a half-day trip to the island of Fano.
Day 8—Drive from Ribe to Odense to see Hans Christian Andersen's house and St. Canute's Cathedral.
Day 9—Drive across the islands of Langeland, Lolland and Falster, then return to Copenhagen.
Day 10—Depart Denmark.
