Formerly the Holiday Inn, this property is the next-best thing to the Hilton. It is located in the heart of downtown Port of Spain, a benefit to business travelers; walking outside after dark, however, is not recommended. The renovated interiors are impressive, and the amenities, especially those designed for business travelers, are luring some of the Hilton faithful this way.
The gleaming lobby boasts imported salmon-color marble, and the chic colorful seating is as comfortable as it is attractive.
The lobby bar sports bright oak paneling, and the neighboring Olympia Restaurant serves
a buffet for all meals. Offering the best views of the city, the only revolving rooftop restaurant in the Caribbean has a more sophisticated dinner-only menu. It is often used for functions during the day. Entertainment centers on the pianist in the lobby bar.
Interesting tables with umbrellas dot the perimeter of the pool, and an awkward circular planter tops the swim-up bar. Active guests enjoy an upgraded gym and jogging around Queen's Park Savannah, 12 blocks away (although this should not be attempted in the evening hours). A new spa offers a menu of relaxing services.
The hotel is focused
on conferences and offers four meeting spaces plus a ballroom with a capacity for 700 people. Free wireless Internet access is available in the lobby and pool areas.
The generously proportioned guest rooms show muted floral fabrics, patterned carpeting, dark-stained appointments, crisp air-conditioning, satellite TVs, and queen or two double beds. Amenities include dual-line phones with data ports, digital clock radios, free high-speed Internet access, coffeemakers, irons, ironing boards, safes, robes and "sleep kits," which include aromatherapy oils, eye masks and relaxation CDs. The combination baths have dual basins in granite or pseudo-marble counters and hair dryers. The furnished balconies are recessed to provide shade, as well as fine city or waterfront views. Rooms facing south afford the best sea vistas. Executive floors are a quiet zone. Five floors are smoke-free, and one room is wheelchair accessible. Breakfast is complimentary to all guests, and room service is offered around the clock. During the climax of Carnival, guests have a minimum stay of Friday through Tuesday.
The Crowne Plaza offers good accommodations, a great location in the heart of the city, and an average staff. For those in town on business, stay here when the Hilton is full, but be prepared for street noise day and night.
