This striking curved cream tower is one of Darwin's top hotels. Centrally located in the cafe and bar district of Mitchell Street, it is minutes from several shopping malls and a 25-minute drive from the airport.
Staffers in the large spacious lobby are helpful and efficient. There is only occasional door staff, but porters are available for baggage handling.
Redsalt Grill provides all day dining and has a light, airy, contempory style offering Asian and local specialities. The adjacent Redsalt Bar opens into the lobby and has an ultracontempory style with strange cube shaped stool-chairs (which are a triumph of style
over comfort), but the cocktail menu is good, and itoffers bar snacks. The Poolside Bar is seasonal and provides snacks by way of room service.
The small rooftop pool with integral spa is on the 10th floor. Plants screen the pool from surrounding buildings, and the small terrace has sun loungers, tables and chairs. There is a small, unimpressive fitness room with eight workstations and a TV, and a hairdresser and an aboriginal craft shop are available during high season.
Total capacity of the four meeting rooms is 516, and the largest accommodates 350. Wi-Fi is available in all conference rooms and public areas. Equipment in
the small business center is unreliable. Valet parking is available for a fee, and an adjacent car park is available for guests. The shared inter-hotel shuttle bus to the airport charges a fee.
Multiple elevators lead to clean, tidy hallways. Rooms are well-maintained, attractively decorated and spacious, and include satellite TVs, King beds, broadband Internet access, voicemail, desks, large closets and plenty of drawer space. There are minibars, safes, irons, hairdryers, tea- and coffeemakers, laundry service and a guest laundry room. There are no balconies.
The baths are clean and well-presented with marble floors and vanity units, but the combination tubs are surprisingly shallow. Large fluffy towels and Red Earth local designer toiletries are standard. Approximately 80 rooms have a partial harbour view but all include unattractive rooftop views. Nine of the ten floors are smoke-free, and there are several wheelchair accessible rooms. Pets are not permitted. Room service is 24-hours.
The Crown Plaza is without doubt the smartest hotel in the city center. Compared to the Holiday Inn Darwin it has a higher level of personal service, rooms are larger and better appointed, and it has more stylish dining and bar options, but the views are less impressive.
