Visitors to Connecticut will find the full range of accommodations, from budget lodgings to first-rate hotels. The state is dotted with charming inns (some restored originals, some renovated country homes) and bed-and-breakfasts. Many offer golf, tennis or boating nearby. We recommend staying in a variety of properties, including at least one inn, but make reservations well in advance—many of the state's inns are extraordinarily popular as weekend getaways for New Yorkers. In Hartford, two historic hotels of note are the Goodwin Hotel (formerly the J.P. Morgan and the Hotel at Goodwin Square) and the Avon Old Farms Hotel (in Avon, about 10 mi/16 km west of town). In Essex, you may want to try the Griswold Inn, an inn that's been in business since 1776.
