Any trip to Cote d'Ivoire should include at least one visit to the coast.
Grand Lahou, to the west of Abidjan,
Assinie and
Assouinde, to the east, have resort facilities and places to swim, both in the ocean and in inland lagoons.
Tiegba, built on stilts above the water, makes a nice excursion from Abidjan. Farther west of Grand Lahou are the sea beaches of
San Pedro and
Tabou, but the ethnic fishing village of
Sassandra is our favorite. Almost any trip along the coast is pleasant and rewarding: Scenery along the way includes lush green oil palms, teak trees and tidy banana plantations.
Note: There are often strong currents and heavy surf in the ocean. Inquire locally about conditions before jumping in.
